How to Shoot a Basketball

I have been working on this ebook for a few months now. To be honest, what motivated me to go ahead an finish the book is the fact that my grandmother is sick.

My grandfather passed away from cancer in 2004. And we just found out that my grandmother has lung cancer. They both know how much I love the game of basketball and I would like to dedicate this ebook to the both of them.

I take you step-by-step the proper way to shoot a basketball. I use 14 pictures to demonstrate the correct positioning of the hand, arm, shoulders and feet. Plus, gives you the secret to being a great shooter.

The techniques in this book are what I used to average over 20 points a game during my junior and high school playing days. And its what I teach to all my players and campers. Get your copy at http://www.patoshajeffery.com/pureshooter.htm

Girls Basketball Success

I received this in an email this morning from a friend of mine, Barry Lovelace. Although, his email was geared more to personal training success, I thought that the
information is valuable to girls wanting success in basketball. Keep reading for the tip.

At 6:00 am this morning I was listening to the radio on the way to
my client..

"Success" was the topic...

They were talking about what it takes to succeed...

Talking about everyone from Michelangelo and Michael Jordon to
Google, there was one thing they all have in common..

Their success did not happen without hard work...

I didn't know that Google was around 10 years before they hit it
big..

I didn't know Micheal Jordan got kicked off his high school
basketball team because he didn't have a good work ethic...

We all know who they are now due to lots of hard work.

What's your work ethic?

Are you going after your goals 1000%?

Do you see success in your future after all your hard work?

I urge you to do whatever it takes to succeed...

If you 'Go for it'.....it WILL come...

It's up to you and it all depends on how hard you work for it.

I have total confidence you WILL achieve success in whatever
you choose.

Good Luck and I wish you all the success in the world.

As soon as last season was over (post-season) and during the summer (off-season) was the time to work on improving your game.

Now you find out the RESULTS of all your hard work (or lack of work).

Remember, Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard.

Girls Basketball Fundamental Boot Camp

I completed my very first Boot Camp on last Thursday. I think it turned out great.

When I first started to tell people about my 4 sessions of training, I had individuals to doubt if anything could get accomplished in such a short period of time. During a span of 4 one hour sessions of training, I had 5 eight year olds who had never shot a basketball on a 10 foot goal. By the end of the 4 week period, they were not only shooting but shooting jump shots not set shots and making them consistently.

I had a 10th grader who took forever to make 10 shots from the elbow positions on the court. To leave the camp with a pretty good jump shot.

So you tell me, is 4 sessions enough time to add a new skill to your game.

If not, add another one at the next Boot Camp.......

The next Memphis Next Top Baller Girls Basketball Fundamental Boot Camp starts September 15, 2007. Pre-registration ends, September 8, 2007.

If you need to work on fundamental skills like ball handling, passing, shooting, defense and foot work, look no futher.

College Basketball Coaches Coming to Memphis

If you are a high school girls basketball player or parent of a high school girls basketball player and you are looking for an opportunity to display your talent in front of dozens of coaches, write down this date.

September 29, 2007

On this date, Blue Star Basketball will be hosting a Fall College Showcase.

Now what is a Showcase? And why should you care?

During certain times of the year, the NCAA allows college basketball coaches the opportunity to evaluate talent outside of the school year's regular basketball season. Hundreds of college coaches travel all over the United States during this time to watch players at these events. I know. I participated at a Blue Star event and it put me on the map. I begin to receive letters from everywhere from this one event. I've also coached players in these types of events and they could not believe the amount of letters they received when they got home.

If you are unhappy with the amount of letters that you are receiving from college coaches or want to see how well you compete against top talent, take advantage of this event.

I am not getting paid to endorse this event. I just know the impact it can make on getting a college basketball scholarship.

Ashley Shields is Back

The Houston Comets has went 2-1 over the last 3 games. Ashley's play in the recent lost almost turn it into a win. She helped the Comets spark a 26-9 run in the third quarter, but the Phoenix Mecury pulled off the 90-85 victory.

Ashley only scored 1 point in 2 minutes in the Comets first victory. However, she has averaged 18 points in 20 minutes over the last 2 games.

Keep it up Ashley!!

Ashley Shields Update

I've been trying to hold out on an update on Ashley Shields WNBA career to give a positive update. But nothing seems to be going right for Ashley nor the Houston Comets. As of today, the Comets is one of the, if not, the worst team in the league. After 8 games, they have not won one. In several of the games, they have lead and lead in double figures.

Ashley started the season 2nd in scoring for the team avering 20 points after the first two games. Now she has dropped to number 4th with a 7.6 points a game. And her playing time has decreased over the last 5 games. I only caught one game on tv about 2 weeks ago and I was sort of disappointed to see them play her at the point. I think Ashley is a two guard. She did not look comfortable in that position with several turnovers. I know the Comets are struggling at the position and maybe they have to go with need right now.

I know Ashley will be a dominate force in the league and she is probably going through some growing pains of a rookie season.

The Goal Setter Go Getter

How does a kid go from an average student to the top of the class?

As an elementary school student, Pat was average. She made Bs, Cs, and an occasional A. She even had a D slip up on her report card. However, she left her junior high school with the highest grade point average. She graduated from high school as co-salutatorian. Pat even graduated from the University of Memphis’ Fogelman College of Business in the Top 10% of the class.

There were 3 steps that Pat executed that propelled her to academic success.

1. Set Goals

Pat had a goal to have a certain grade point average at the end of each grading period.

There has to be a desired result in mind. Goals create direction. It gives you something to strive for.

2. Set Mini-Goals

Pat broke down the grades she had to make in each class to reach the desired grade point average.

After the goal is established, there should be mini-goals or stepping stones set to create the path to the desired goal. This makes the task more doable and not overwhelming.

3. Prioritize activities

When Pat arrived at home, it was understood to do home work or study before watching TV, talking on the phone and any other activities.

When goals are established, some activities may have to be minimized to accomplish the goal.

Pat never imagined she would be Valedictorian of her junior high school class, Co-Salutatorian of her high school class, nor in the Top 10% of the College of Business class. However, she did learn that if you take care of the small things the big things will take care of themselves.

Ashley Shields Makes History

Ashley Shields of Memphis, TN made history today. She became the first Junior College Player Ever to be drafted in the WNBA. She was selected 8th overall by the Houston Comets.

This is such an insprirational story and I am so happy for Ashley. Ashley played for the same high school coach I played for, Robert Newman. She started her high school career at Hamilton High as a ninth grader and then transferred to Melrose High in the eleventh grade. She signed a letter of intent with the University of Memphis, however she never played there because of academic issues. She transferred to Northwest Mississippi Community College but only played a couple of games due to pregnancy. From there she transferred to Southwest Tennessee Community College, she was not able to play during her first year because of academic issues again.

However, the next year (2006-2007) Shields led the NJCAA in scoring with an average of 27.4 points per game and was among national leaders in rebounding (11.3), assists (6.6) and steals (4.1). She also led the Lady Saluqis in field goal percentage (.558), and three-point percentage (.443). She recorded four triple-doubles and 19 double-doubles this season and had season highs of 15 rebounds (vs. Arkansas Baptist, Hiwassee, and Saint Catharine), 14 assists (vs. Jackson State), eight steals (vs. Cleveland State), and four blocke d shots (vs. Hiwassee). Ashley Shields was named Player of the Year in the Tennessee Junior and Community College Athletic Association by a unanimous vote of the coaches. Also, Shields was chosen to the 2007 Junior College/Community College Kodak/WBCA All-American Team. The Kodak team, selected by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, consists of ten players selected from among the over 500 NJCAA member schools.

Congratulations to Ashley Shields.

Ladies this story should inspire you to never ever quit on your dreams and goals..

Attitude of a Dominate Girls Basketball Player

Last week, I spoke to Head Coach Andrea Martre of Southwest Tennessee Community College.
Coach Andrea Martre was named Western Division and TJCCAA Coach of the Year after guiding Southwest to a 26-2 record, the Western Division championship, and a number 13 national ranking this season. It was the third time Martre has been honored as coach of the year by the TJCCAA. In eleven years as coach at Southwest, Martre has compiled a 178-120 record.

As you can see, Coach Martre had a heck of a season this year. She also had the opportunity to coach one of the most talented and gifted players to come out of the Memphis area, Ashley Shields. Shields led the NJCAA in scoring this season with an average of 27.4 points per game and was among national leaders in rebounding (11.3), assists (6.6) and steals (4.1).

PJ: How do you believe the game has developed for girls since you’ve been involved? (intensity, skill level)
CM: The game is faster, players are bigger and stronger.

PJ: What skill do you believe girls are lacking the most when they arrive at college? What can they do to develop those skills?
CM: They lack KNOWLEDGE of the game. Need to read and watch more games and basketball videos.

PJ: Some players may feel that starting out at a junior college is not for them. What are the benefits of playing at a junior college?
CM: Academically they can get better if the talent is there and if they lack skill it will help them get better to move to the next level.

PJ: You coached the TJCCAA PLAYER OF THE YEAR, Ashley Shields. She lead the NJCAA in scoring this season with an average of 27.4 points per game and was among national leaders in rebounding (11.3), assists (6.6) and steals (4.1). What characteristics does Shields have that plays a part in her being such a dominate player? (work ethic, attitude)
CM: She is a WINNER at HEART and she plays to WIN!!!!

PJ: Is there any advice you would like to provide for young players?
CM: Keep an open mine and be willing to try something NEW!!

Where to Get Basketball Knowledge

A couple of weeks ago, I interviewed University of Southern Miss' Assistant Coach, Brooks Donald (NOW HEAD COACH OF MCNEESE STATE). I asked her what skill girls players lacked the most when they arrived at college. She stated, "Knowledge of the game. In this day and age, there are more athletes that advance to the next level than knowledgable, skilled basketball players. I think girls don't watch the game enough. Watching basketball is like studying. Watching basketball really enhances your knowledge of the game."

I am here in Duluth, GA for the SEC Women's Basketball Tournament.. THIS IS DEFINITELY A PLACE TO STUDY BASKETBALL. Imagine a weekend of watching Candace Parker of Tennessee, Alliesha Easley and Armintie Price of Ole Miss, Sylvia Fowles of LSU and Tasha Humphrey of Georgia. You get to learn from the top players in the nation and maybe get you an autograph or two.

The SEC Tournament is not the only conference tournament you can study basketball and players. You have the ACC, Conference USA, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Mountain West, etc. There are plenty of conferences for you to choose from.

Imagine how much more your game will develop and how much more you will be inspired to play basketball after attending a basketball conference. If you can only get to one game, that is better than not attending at all.

Importance of April 14-15 Weekend

We are heading into March Madness which means High School Basketball is coming to an end.

Now players are preparing to tryout for AAU Teams and other Summer Teams.

As you prepare for tryouts, I want to make you aware of how important the weekend of April 14-15 is. If you have a desire to play for a Division 1 University, this weekend is especially important for you. This is the first weekend of the year when Division 1 College Coaches can come out an evaluate a non-high school basketball game and watch you play. This is one of the BIGGEST EVALUATION WEEKENDS of the Year.

For a listing of all the NCAA-CERTIFIED Basketball events college coaches will attend on the weekend of APRIL 14-15, visit http://tinyurl.com/26jwxd . (Note: You may have to wait on the page to load. Also, if you get a page not found error, reload the page.)

Basketball Knowledge is Power

I had an opportunity to talk to my college coach, Joye Lee McNelis, and here assistant, Coach Brooks Donald, of the University of Southern Mississippi Women's Basketball (NOW HEAD COACH OF MCNEESE STATE) team before their shoot around here in Memphis. Coach McNelis and here staff is definitely turning that program around and with only 8 players on the roster..

Coach Donald breaks down academics both on the court and in the class room.

PJ: How and when did you get involved with basketball?
CD:I began playing basketball in second grade (long time ago) and began coaching the summer of my Freshman year in college.

PJ: How do you believe the game has developed or changed for girls since you’ve been involved? Intensity, skill level, competition.
CD: The game has changed a lot since I was a kid. The competition has definitely improved and expanded.

PJ: What skill do you believe girls are lacking the most when they arrive at college?
CD: Knowledge of the game. In this day and age, there are more athletes that advance to the next level than knowledgable, skilled basketball players. I think girls don't watch the game enough. Watching basketball is like studying. Watching basketball really enhances your knowledge of the game.

PJ: As recruiting coordinator, how do you find recruits? Camps, high school games, etc.
CD:We find young ladies in various places. Having them attend camp is a golden opportunity because we get to be around the athlete and get a feel for what their character is and how they interact with our program. Other than camps, we really like to evaluate talent in the spring & summer against National talent. We, as coaches, get to see them go up against the best in the South or the best in the country. High School games are imperative as well. We like to see them challenged against a rival team. We also like to see how (and if) they take over the game in high school. And how they respond to the lower level of talent. We also watch how they respond to coaching.

PJ: Now let's talk Academics.. Some athletes may think that if they can play basketball really good, they don't have to take care of business in the classroom. From your experience, what kind of advice can you give on the subject of academics?
CD:Well, all I can say is academics come first. I think almost everyone can look around them and find an example of someone not reaching their full potential & expectations because they did not take care of business in the classroom. The NCAA has implemented several new rules that have made it more difficult for colleges to even take chances on at risk student-athletes no matter how talented she may be. In saying that, I think it is more important than it has ever been to be strong academically and to take the ACT now as a Sophomore and a Junior. Take the test as many times as it is offered. Taking care of everything off the court (grades, homework, diet, exercise, good attitude, positive life) is more important than doing anything on that hardwood.

PJ: Is there any advice you would like to provide for young players?
CD:My advice to young players is to work as hard as you possibly can! There are so many resources on and off the floor for you to succeed to your fullest potential! Take advantage of them! Don't wait! Work on your game everyday! Be disciplined! Listen to your coaches! Be a gym rat! Watch basketball! Learn the game! And most of all, play and study with a PASSION every day!

What happened to the Pure Shooter?

I had an interesting converstation with a good friend, Coach Sytia Messer, Assistant Women's Basketball Coach at Georgia Tech. http://www.gatech.edu/ She brought up some information that even surprised me. Check it out.

PJ: How and when did you get involved with basketball?
CM: I got involved with basketball because I had two older sisters that played college basketball.

PJ: How do you focus on development with your players?
CM: During the summer, our players attend colliegate basketball camps. During the season, the players attend individual shooting segments outside of practice.

PJ: What skill do you believe girls are lacking the most when they arrive at college?
CM: The pure jump shot is a skill lacking in players. One of the highly recruited players is a pure jump shooter.

PJ: As recruiting coordinator, how do you find recruits? Camps, high school games, etc.
CM: There are 2 ways I find players. Number 1 is through self-evaluation. During the summer evaluation period, I attend AAU events. The second way is at Mike White Events and through his recruiting report, All Star Girls Report.

PJ: Do you coach the guards at the Georgia Tech?
CM: This year I am coaching the post.

PJ: What skills can guards and post develop to increase their games?
CM: Again, guards can work on their shooting. Most post players now face up and take you off the dribble. Posts should work on scoring with their back to the basket.

PJ: Is there any advice you would like to provide for young players?
CM: For high school players, I recommend that you get involved in summer play. Use AAU and other events for exposure to market yourself. But not only that, get in a gym and shoot more.

Benefits of Junior College Basketball Career

I had an awesome opportunity to speak to Coach Bridget Goodnight of Pensacola Junior College. www.pjc.edu . Coach Goodnight provides some incredible information and tips on preparing yourself for college basketball and the hidden benefits of a junior college basketball career.

PJ: How and when did you get involved with basketball?
CG: I started playing at a very young age with my brother and his friends. I started playing organized basketball in the third grade and continued through four years of college.

PJ: How do you believe the game has developed for girls since you’ve been involved?
CG: There are more opportunities now. Girls receive more exposure through AAU, camps, leagues, etc. As far as the game, it is played at a much faster pace due to athleticism and strength.

PJ: What skill do you believe girls are lacking the most when they arrive at college? What can they do to develop those skills?
CG: As far as skill, defensive positioning and guarding 1 on 1 is an issue. A great way to development defensive skill is to increase foot quickness. A jump rope is a simple and inexpensive tool that develops foot quickness and coordination.

PJ: Some players may feel that starting out at a junior college is not for them. What are the benefits of playing at a junior college?
CG:Some benefits to junior college are as follows: easier transition from high school to college life, getting academics in order and getting 1 on 1 attention from teachers, playing time prepares athletes to play at the next level, athletes are recruited heavily by DI schools which leads to more opportunities for the individual.

PJ: Coach, you are from Batesville, MS, which is right up the street from Memphis. Do you feel that you are a long way from home being in Florida?
CG: When most people think of Florida, they think of how far away it is. Pensacola is the first Florida town you come to when you pass thorugh Mobile, AL. It is very close to Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Many athletes are recruited from these areas.

PJ: What conference do you play in? How competitive is it?
CG: We play in the Panhandle Conference. It is very competitive. This makes our conference one of the most heavily recruited conferences in the country. Most DI coaches know that if an athlete has played in this conference, then they must have the skills necessary to play at the next level. Out of the six teams in the conference, usually 4 of them are ranked on the national level. This also means that the games are highly competitive. The players must be ready to play night in and night out.

PJ: Is there any advice you would like to provide for young players?
CG: The advice I would give to prospective student athletes is prepare yourself as much as possible. Off season workouts are a must. You cannot come into a college program and stay the same player you were in high school. This will take many hours of hard work. In order to be prepared, you must be able to exhibit self-discipline. This means physically, mentally, and academically. Make sure you totally commit yourself to the decision you make to play college basketball and pursue a college degree.

How to Improve Your Game

Some basketball players are satisfied with being an average player or just being on the team. While the top players, are not. They enjoy the attention, the competition, the leadership role and responsibility. It is quite easy to turn your game around and become a top player. The question is “do you have the desire?” Listed below are the things you must do to improve your game.

1. Listen to your coach.

The first key to improving your game is your coach. What is your coach always complaining or nagging you about? Rebounding. Defense. Hustling. Think about it. If you need specific directions on what to improve, go ask your coach. They will tell you what you need to work on and not only that, they will show you how to perform the task properly.

2. Work Extra.

Team practices are not the time to work on your individual game. You must find time outside of practice to work on the skills your coach told you to work on. Set one to two days to the side each week to work on your game. You must be consistent. You will be surprised at how your game develops over time.

3. Set Goals.

Challenge yourself. Setting goals gives you the opportunity to go after something. If you average 2 rebounds per game, set a goal to double that. If you have the role to defend the best offensive player during a game, set a goal to hold them within a certain amount of points.

Improving your game is not hard to do. It takes desire, consistency and the willingness to work. Are you willing and ready?

Where's the BEEF?

Do you seem to not be able to make a jump shot on a consistent basis?

Does the ball seem to go to the left or the right and not into the basket?

Well you need to find your BEEF..

BEEF is what you need to correct your form on your shot.

Balance -- Make sure you are standing in a position with your feet a little closer than shoulder with apart. Also, make sure your shoulders and body is squared up to the basket.

Elbows in -- Bring your shooting arm up as if you are about to shoot a ball. Make sure that your elbow is close to your body and not extending out.

Eyes on target -- Your target should be the basket or if you are shooting a bank shot, your target should be near the tip of the box on the backboard.

Follow-through-- I'm sure you have seen the movie, Love and Basketball. Remember during a game when Sanaa Lathan took the jump shot during the game and just stood there with her shooting hand and arm extended toward the goal. That was a perfect follow through.

Try it. Find your BEEF.
