Ashley lead the team in scoring by putting up 19 points from off the bench. The Goal Setter Go Getter

How does a kid go from an average student to the top of the class?

As an elementary school student, Pat was average. She made Bs, Cs, and an occasional A. She even had a D slip up on her report card. However, she left her junior high school with the highest grade point average. She graduated from high school as co-salutatorian. Pat even graduated from the University of Memphis’ Fogelman College of Business in the Top 10% of the class.


There were 3 steps that Pat executed that propelled her to academic success.

1. Set Goals

Pat had a goal to have a certain grade point average at the end of each grading period.

There has to be a desired result in mind. Goals create direction. It gives you something to strive for.

2. Set Mini-Goals

Pat broke down the grades she had to make in each class to reach the desired grade point average.

After the goal is established, there should be mini-goals or stepping stones set to create the path to the desired goal. This makes the task more doable and not overwhelming.

3. Prioritize activities

When Pat arrived at home, it was understood to do home work or study before watching TV, talking on the phone and any other activities.

When goals are established, some activities may have to be minimized to accomplish the goal.

Pat never imagined she would be Valedictorian of her junior high school class, Co-Salutatorian of her high school class, nor in the Top 10% of the College of Business class. However, she did learn that if you take care of the small things the big things will take care of themselves.

Ashley Shields Makes History

Ashley Shields of Memphis, TN made history today. She became the first Junior College Player Ever to be drafted in the WNBA. She was selected 8th overall by the Houston Comets.

This is such an insprirational story and I am so happy for Ashley. Ashley played for the same high school coach I played for, Robert Newman. She started her high school career at Hamilton High as a ninth grader and then transferred to Melrose High in the eleventh grade. She signed a letter of intent with the University of Memphis, however she never played there because of academic issues. She transferred to Northwest Mississippi Community College but only played a couple of games due to pregnancy. From there she transferred to Southwest Tennessee Community College, she was not able to play during her first year because of academic issues again.

However, the next year (2006-2007) Shields led the NJCAA in scoring with an average of 27.4 points per game and was among national leaders in rebounding (11.3), assists (6.6) and steals (4.1). She also led the Lady Saluqis in field goal percentage (.558), and three-point percentage (.443). She recorded four triple-doubles and 19 double-doubles this season and had season highs of 15 rebounds (vs. Arkansas Baptist, Hiwassee, and Saint Catharine), 14 assists (vs. Jackson State), eight steals (vs. Cleveland State), and four blocke d shots (vs. Hiwassee). Ashley Shields was named Player of the Year in the Tennessee Junior and Community College Athletic Association by a unanimous vote of the coaches. Also, Shields was chosen to the 2007 Junior College/Community College Kodak/WBCA All-American Team. The Kodak team, selected by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, consists of ten players selected from among the over 500 NJCAA member schools.
